Creating a fursona is no easy feat. A “fursona” as a concept is literally a “furry persona”. It’s an expression of both the person’s actual self and their ideal self. A means in which to express their interests, tastes, and even kinks. But how does someone create a fursona?

A good fursona should be personal to you. Not something made to impress others. Fursonas are traditionally centered on anthropomorphic animals. But hybrid species or species based on fictional/fantasy creatures are also valid, such as Koopas or Protogens. Take time to think about which design elements resonate most with you. There’s nothing wrong with taking inspiration from others’ fursonas. Just make sure not to turn your fursona into a near-identical copy!

Already got some ideas brewing? Read on to flesh them out into your very own fursona! With thousands of possibilities, there’s something unique for everyone!

What Is A Fursona?

To create a fursona, you will obviously need to know what a “fursona” is. We previously mentioned that a fursona means “furry persona”. But what are the specific details for that definition? We'll start by discussing each word separately.

The basic definition of a “furry” is an anthropomorphic animal. This means a humanoid animal that has human characteristics, such as speech and human-level intelligence. However, a furry doesn't have to be based only on real animals.

Some furries are based on mythical creatures, such as dragons or werewolves. Some may be based on fictional creatures, like Pokémon or Koopas. Alternatively, some furries aren’t based on animals or creatures at all. Protogens take inspiration from robotics and technology. Whilst aeromorphs are furry versions of airplanes.

As for the meaning of “persona”, it means a facade that a person uses to represent themselves to others. Usually, to create a perception of the ideal version of that person. A persona can be presented through changes in behavior, personality, or appearance. Usually, a combination of all three.

Therefore, a fursona combines the two words. A fursona is literally a persona that is focused on the concept of furries. It is an ideal anthropomorphic representation of the self.

A different appearance is the main focus here. But furries often adopt behaviors or personalities that differ from those of their human selves. This may reflect how they would ideally be seen. But some furries may opt to simply act the same as their human selves.

Fursonas are seen all over the furry fandom. Both in online and offline spaces. They allow members of the furry fandom to express their unique sense of identity through their fursona’s design, even if someone were to share a fursona species with another furry.

Transformation and Identity: Why We Create Fursonas

With the basic idea of what a fursona is covered, another question is raised. Why do some people create fursonas instead of human personas? What is the appeal? The answer lies in the concepts of transformation and identity.

The Psychology Of Becoming

The concepts of human-animal hybrids and transformation have appeared countless times throughout human history. As long as humans have been able to imagine, there has always been a fascination with exploring the boundaries of humanity and identity.

Part of this fixation stems from the human desire to move beyond fixed identities. Our imaginations are powerful tools. They allow us to think about impossible and fantastical concepts. Meaning we have a constant craving to experience new things. Some may also wish to fully immerse themselves in these different identities as a form of escapism.

Hybrids and transformation tickle this itch to understand what it feels like to be something else. A fascination with what it must feel like to have a completely different body and species. To become something completely different instead of being the same for the rest of our lives.

This is likely why fursonas are so popular. They represent a form of modern expression of fluid identity. An arguably “mainstream” way for people to explore the idea of pushing their identity beyond species barriers. To temporarily “transform” into something completely different from their normal selves.

The desire to explore and toy with the concept of identity is partially why companies such as Smitizen exist. Our philosophy is that we focus on transformation as both embodiment and art. We understand how important it is for people to express themselves through transformation.

The Future Of Fursona Ideas

Given how long the concept of furries has existed, it's clear that humanity will continue to create variations of fursonas for years to come. It can be hard to imagine what a fursona could be.

Fursonas are a constantly adapting concept. Protogens and aeromorphs only came to exist as a fursona species once the associated technology became mainstream. Therefore, we can examine the past evolution of fursonas to predict their future.

We’re already seeing the emergence of hybrid species such as bearcrocs. So it’s very likely that more complex hybrid and cross-species designs will become more mainstream. Or the presence of more, currently uncommon fursona species, such as insects.

It’s likely there will be more fursonas with an emphasis on technological aspects. With the rise of AI, VTubers, and Augmented Reality, it’s likely that some fursonas will incorporate these technologies into their designs.

There might be a hologram-centered fursona with hologram hardware integrated into their body. Or fursonas that exist solely in digital spaces, without the need for a physical fursuit, thanks to advancements in VR, allowing someone to actually be their fursona in VR.

As society becomes more progressive and inclusive regarding gender, it’s possible that in the future, attitudes regarding identity as a whole may also become more relaxed. This concept already has roots in human history.

Whilst not exactly the same as a fursona, the concept of a “spirit animal” forms an important part of some indigenous beliefs and identities. This connection to another species is one we see in countless variations.

In combination with advancements in technology such as VR and Augmented Reality, the lines between virtual and real may become blurred. As such, people may interact with each other using avatars in an offline space.

Some may choose to interact with others only this way. Feeling that a virtual representation of their fursona is their “ideal” or “true” self. Allowing for deeper exploration of the concept of identity.

So, don’t feel afraid to embrace innovation and inclusivity when creating your fursona! It will both help you create something unique and personal to you, whilst possibly also being the start of a new, mainstream fursona species!

Inspiration from the Community: How Fans Choose Their Fursonas

Still stuck on what to choose for your fursona? Or just curious to see how the furry fandom chooses their fursonas? We’ve done our research and got answers directly from actual furries for you!

What Furry Fans Are Asking

To begin with, we'll cover some common questions that arise when creating a fursona. One of these is “What are some unique ideas for fursona species?”

There are millions of animal species. But mammals are typically a popular choice for fursonas. Due to their popularity in the media, their common use as pets, and their general exposure in modern society. And of course, the presence of fur.

With the concept of a fursona growing in popularity over time, some individuals feel that some fursona species are overrepresented. There is a stereotype in the furry community that someone’s first fursona is often a blue wolf or fox.

As such, there is often frustration when creating a fursona. Most individuals will want something furry, but unusual. They want their fursona to feel unique while still catering to their preferences in furry designs.

Community Trends And Creative Suggestions

So, we've established that there is a desire for fursonas to be unique and stand out from common species. Our research also asked furries for some suggestions on what makes a “unique” fursona species.

Many furries agreed that aquatic animals such as octopi, sea bunnies, and platypuses don’t see much fursona representation. There was also mention of flying creatures, like birds, bats, and colugos.

Sticking to mammals, some suggestions for rarer mammals included pangolins, binturongs, civets, and tree kangaroos. Some people also suggested hybrids or fantasy species, like fluffy sharks, dragon-lynx, or fox-rabbits.

Overall, a mix of originality and relatability is a key factor for ideal fursona designs. The ability to stand out whilst remaining emotionally meaningful to the fursona’s owner.

Data Speaks: What 6,000 Fursonas Reveal

Overview of the Research

We noted which fursona species each survey participant had. With over 6,000 responses, there were about 852 unique species in total!

Whilst a majority of these categories represent common animal species and their breeds, there were a few exceptions. “Mythical” typically covered both creatures from folklore (Werewolves, Kitsune) and fiction (Pokémon, Koopas).

“Hybrids” were a combination of at least two or more different species. Whilst “unspecified” was used when a species, but not an exact breed, was mentioned. For example, a fursona’s species may be “dog”, but they may not wish for their fursona to be inspired by an actual dog breed.

Top 10 Most Popular Fursona Species

So, with our overview explained. Let's look into the results! Starting with the top 10 most popular fursona species!

  1. Hybrid
  2. Wolf
  3. Fox
  4. Dog
  5. Big Cat
  6. Dragon
  7. Mythical Creature
  8. Cat
  9. Small Mammal
  10. Rodent

Some of these results may surprise you. Hybrids are a lot more common than furry stereotypes may make you believe! However, the results do show that there is still some truth to the assumption that many people's fursonas use the same species.

Wolf, fox, and dog take spots 2-4. Common stereotypes for fursona species. As mentioned previously, this is likely due to the large number of anthropomorphic characters in media featuring these species, such as Robin Hood, The Bad Guys, or Star Fox.

The reason that hybrids take the top spot is likely in response to this overabundance of the rest of the species in the list. Providing a way to create a unique species whilst representing elements of existing fursonas that are appealing.

However, nearly 25% of respondents identified their fursona as “other”. Showing that even with some clear choices for popular fursona species, there is still plenty of diversity and creativity within the furry community. Uniqueness is encouraged!

Why Hybrids Dominate

We will get into more detail about why hybrids, a relatively recent concept in fursona, have dominated the top 10. Whilst the desire to be unique is a key factor, hybrids may also be appealing due to their symbolism. Hybrids embody duality, transformation, balance, and complexity.

These concepts may be appealing as they reflect the mental states and desires of modern society. Technology is advancing rapidly, yet human and workers' rights are falling behind. Minimum wage jobs are demanding more from their workers than ever before.

Stability and simplicity aren’t concepts that many of us have the privilege of experiencing. Therefore, a fursona that represents that idea of complexity becomes subconsciously more appealing.

On the creative side, hybrids also offer many interesting design ideas. It is possible for two people to choose the same hybrid species, such as a wolf-dragon. However, they may choose to incorporate completely different design elements from each species.

One may be more dragon than wolf. Or one may be covered in scales instead of fur. There may also be a mix of meanings achieved through hybrids. For example, a wolf-dragon represents a strong leader and protector. Something wise, yet with a cocky, wild side.

As for the theme of transformation, whilst prevalent among other fursona species, hybrids embrace this concept even further. In essence, even if a hybrid is based on a couple of animal species, it is also a hybrid of their creator’s human self.

There is the idea of blending human and animal, along with fantasy and reality, in ways that extend beyond usual fursona creation. Much like the sorts of transformation we aim to represent within Smitizen’s brand.

There is a desire to experience something entirely new and transcendent to explore the concept of self. Hybrids allow for this, as your creativity and imagination are the limit.

Creative Direction: Finding Your Own Fursona Idea

You should now have a good understanding of why people create fursonas, along with knowing what some of the more popular types of fursona are. But are you still struggling to decide upon what you want your fursona to be? Keep reading for some inspiration!

Match Your Personality to a Species

A fursona typically represents your personality in real life (though not always!). Therefore, a good starting point is to determine which species suits your personality best. Or the personality you’d like your fursona to convey.

We’ve created a grid with a few examples. But keep in mind that this is only a guide! There’s nothing stopping you from going with a species if you like how they look. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!

Here are five different personality types, each represented by a symbolic animal species and their defining traits:

1. Leader & Protector

Symbolized by wolves, lions, and dragons, this type is loyal, confident, and strong. They naturally take charge and protect those around them, giving off a sense of stability and power.

2. Trickster & Free Spirit

Represented by foxes, raccoons, and coyotes, these individuals are clever, witty, and curious. They enjoy freedom, think outside the box, and often bring humor and unpredictability into any situation.

3. Empath & Dreamer

With deer, rabbits, and otters as their symbols, this type is gentle, emotional, and imaginative. They have a deep sensitivity to emotions and a strong inner world, often embodying idealism or artistic tendencies.

4. Mystic & Night Owl

Cats, owls, and bats represent this introspective and mysterious personality. They are thoughtful and observant, and often thrive in solitude or at night, where their intuition shines.

5. Visionary & Artist

Symbolized by phoenixes, gryphons, and dragons, these individuals are creative, expressive, and idealistic. They are inspired and enjoy transforming their ideas into meaningful creations.

Rare and Unusual Fursona Ideas

Another route to take, especially if you’re looking for something unique, is to look towards some lesser-seen species of animal for inspiration. Luckily for you, we’ve found a few examples!

  • Colugo: Similar to bats, but with huge eyes and unique fur patterns. Great potential to be designed to emphasize cute features.
  • Potoo: A Type of bird that is already underrepresented as a species. Very distinctive, wide beak and huge eyes. It could easily be made into a creepy or goofy-looking fursona.
  • Jerboa: Looks like a hybrid between a mouse and a rabbit. Lots of cute charm to work with already. Long, distinctive legs could be great for a fursona who loves jogging.
  • Fairy Armadillo: Very distinct colors, pink and yellow/white, make them stand out. Could be a great counterpart to a regular armadillo fursona. The fairy armadillo is the shy, fluffy, chubby brother of an outgoing, muscular armadillo.
  • Quokka: Already has a very sweet and cute appearance. They often look like they’re smiling. It could be a great choice for a fat, friendly middle-aged man fursona.
  • Civet: Very distinct fur patterns on a species that looks like a mix between a raccoon and a hyena. They have a natural musk, which may appeal to some. Almost nervous-looking faces also suggest there are many interesting design elements to work with.
  • Tree Kangaroo: Fluffier alternative to those who enjoy the idea of a kangaroo fursona, but want more fur. It almost looks like a mix of a kangaroo and a small bear. They also have distinctive white and brown fur. Again, it could work well as a companion to a regular kangaroo fursona.
  • Pangolin: Scaled mammals, which is already a very interesting concept. They’re distinct in appearance, only vaguely resembling armadillos at a stretch. The way they stand and clutch their front claws together suggests someone nervously waiting to ask a question. Lots of potential for interesting fursona design choices.

Remember, these are only some ideas. Bold experimentation is encouraged! Use originality as a form of self-expression. That is why fursonas are so popular, after all! Feel free to find some even rarer choices for inspiration, if you wish!

Anthro or Feral? Choosing Your Style

With a species in mind, you may also wish to consider whether you want your fursona to be “anthro” or “feral”. Anthro (anthropomorphic) refers to your traditional, bipedal fursonas. Whilst feral refers to fursonas that closely resemble the original animal they’re based on.

Usually, the range of anthropo-feral is gauged based on a 7-point scale. With 1 being completely feral, 4 being a mix of feral/anthro, and 7 being completely anthro. Feel free to look at examples of how fursona designs vary across this scale for inspiration!

Most fursonas were identified as being “completely anthro” in the survey. This is largely true across most fursonas. However, don’t let that sway you away from going for a more feral design if you’re gravitating towards one!

Still struggling to decide? Go with Anthro if you want your design to be more humanlike, expressive, and fashion-forward. Go with feral if you want something instinctual, primal, and nature-connected. Unable to pick between them? Going with a mix of both can symbolise emotional and creative balance.

Bringing Your Fursona to Life

With your species and anthropomorphism scale decided upon, you’re almost ready to create your fursona! Follow these extra steps to really bring your fursona to life!

Building Personality and Backstory

Whilst this is a completely optional step, thinking about your fursona’s personality and backstory can add extra depth. Some may choose to simply have their fursona reflect their actual self, which is perfectly valid!

If you are considering giving your fursona a different personality and backstory, start with a theme and work around that. What do you want your fursona to represent? Home? Friendship? Transformation? Freedom?

Once you’ve decided on a few themes, consider how they may link to your fursona’s backstory. For example, with transformation, is this literal? Was your fursona previously human? Or is it more of a symbolic theme? Were they once bad person, but redeemed themselves?

From your established backstory, you can then work out their personality. Think about how your fursona’s backstory affects their motivations, emotions, and quirks. How does this affect the way they interact with the world around them?

Storytelling and Scenario Inspiration

With your backstory and personality decided, you should consider which kinds of scenarios you'd like your fursona to be in. Once again, this is completely optional. Your fursona can be in situations that happened to you in real life, if you like!

These scenarios also don't have to be anything too complicated. If you want your fursona to be a knight, you don’t have to create an elaborate story of their heroic deeds. Just do what feels right to you and your fursona.

However, using storytelling and “lore” for your fursona encourages a deeper connection with others. These scenarios help bring a character to life and deepen identity exploration.

Want some examples of scenarios and character types? Try some of the following suggestions! Though keep in mind, there is no wrong way to be creative with your scenarios!

  • Fantasy adventures (dragon knight, forest guardian)
  • Slice-of-life stories (fox artist, otter traveler)
  • Sci-fi and cyberpunk settings (hybrid androids, augmented beasts)
  • Aquatic or mythical realms (mer-dragons, sea bunnies)

Design Tips for a Memorable Fursona

Finally, with your concept for your fursona fully fleshed out, it’s time to think about your fursona’s design. This may sound daunting, especially if you’re not an artist. But don’t worry! We’ve got five steps for you to follow to make things easier!

As long as you clearly convey your ideas for your fursona’s design to an artist, they’ll be able to bring your fursona to life! Even a basic, rough sketch with some bullet points describing specific elements can be enough to work with! So, what are the steps?

1. Start with the Concept, Not the Colors

Focus on your basic ideas first, like species, design quirks, and if they’re anthro/feral. Colors can be chosen once you have decided on a complete concept. They may even help certain design choices or themes be more prevalent!

2. Use Contrasts (Cute + Fierce, Soft + Angular)

Contrasts can add some extra flair to some of the more common fursona species. Feel free to toy with people’s expectations for how fursonas should look. However, there’s nothing wrong with keeping things normal, either!

3. Dd Symbolic Details (Tattoos, Jewelry, Scars, Accessories)

You may find that after you’ve settled for a concept and colours, you still feel that something is missing. Feel free to experiment with adding extra details and see if that works. Sometimes the smallest changes can make the biggest difference!

4. Pick a Name That Fits the Species’ Tone and Personality

Even if your fursona is mostly based on yourself, you don’t have to stick with your actual name! Your fursona is likely to be more memorable if it also has a memorable and thematic name!

5. Let Your Design Evolve — Redesign as Your Story Grows

We all grow older and change appearances over our lifetimes. So why not let that happen to your fursona, too? If you find yourself too attached to your fursona’s design to change it, you can always try creating another fursona to experiment with!
